#18 The Elements: Air, Fire, Earth, Water
Aug. 10th, 2005 10:19 amTitle: Four Corners
Challenge: #18 The Elements
Crossover: AtS/Highlander
Characters: Air (Wesley), Fire (Illyria), Earth (Joe Dawson), Water (Methos)
Notes: These fit in the Encore Une Fois universe, with one very small spoiler for Special Brand of Crazy
Title: Air
Slivers of cold light skittered through the darkening air. What was once insubstantial rippled into existence with a thrum felt deep in his bones. Dusk, the gloaming when things impossible became seductively real, was upon them and it filled him up with portentous possibilities.
Wesley watched the Yule dusk break apart into shattered illusions and almost smiled. It was, indeed, the perfect gift for his lady. He would give her what he had once taken away, now fully understood and fully controlled.
The demon-god stretched her perfect fingers outward, face lined with satisfaction, and pushed through the tear in reality.
Title: Fire
Emotions bit at her, scraping across her mind like fire playing through a burning field. Crisp flares of pain reminded her that this was now her fate. Brought down by eons of righteous pride, a sin she could not shake.
She was imprisoned in this shell, tormented by memories of filth-borne fears and hopes of sin, of failure, of love.
These concepts could claw no purchase on slippery demon souls but now they hissed and spit at her in flames of discontent, charring her with the same intensity she used to annihilate her enemies.
Illyria now learned also of irony.
Title: Earth
Joe could not remember the last time he had been so shaken. His mind could not fully comprehend how the world had changed, how the Game could be unraveled by the untimely death of an otherwise insignificant person, this Wesley Wyndham-Pryce.
He moved slowly, eyes on the ground. He resisted the urge to bury his fingers deep in the dark garden soil and hold on tight so the world did not spin him off into nothingness, adrift alone.
With a bone deep sigh, he walked away from the other Watcher’s Council and back to the remains of his former life.
Title: Water
There was little merit in drinking water. It was tasteless and boring, the beverage for people without beer. Methos was an expert on beer. It was very good for drinking. Lagers, stouts, or porters. He didn’t much care.
He listened to the news articles by talking heads on the glories of drinking 64 ounces of water a day and decided that he’d make his own decisions. He’d be happy to drink 64 ounces of beer daily, thank you very much.
But- he reconsidered as he sprayed a stream of holy water into a vampire’s face- water certainly had its uses.

Date: 2005-08-10 05:08 pm (UTC)The contrast between down-to-earth and ethereal was deliberate- to not only play to the four element theme but also to show how disconnected and removed Illyria and Wes are and that Joe and Methos, for all their supernatural connections, have chosen to live in and with the world.
Sometimes I think too much.
Glad you enjoyed them!

Date: 2005-08-10 05:10 pm (UTC)I have to say that I agree with
I've been out of the lj loop lately...have you written more in the Encore Une Fois universe lately?

Date: 2005-08-10 05:15 pm (UTC)Thank you for the feedback. It's nice to see that some of my more esoteric writing choices come through well, and make sense to the readers. I see the foursome as a spectrum with Joe at one end and Illyria at the other, with Methos and Wes inbetween, on living in the world, dealing with it (to varying degrees of success) and with each other.

Date: 2005-08-15 11:29 pm (UTC)The stark difference in them (Wes, Ilyria v. Methos, Joe) are almost unsettling, keeping in mind that they are in the same 'verse. Joe and Methos are both very practical and sane, while Wes and Illyria... let's go with the not on that one.
The imagery in the first one still sends chills up my spine. Methos' is very in his voice, with the beer :)
Love them all.
