Challenge #117 - Lost In Translation

Summary: Starting a musical revolution is okay with Oz, but the OZ has a scene he already likes.
Notes: 4th in my unnamed series. Also possibly the most disjointed of the lot :-/
Oz appreciates sitting in on jam sessions with his dad and uncle more now than he did on the Other Side. What they had taught him about improv and sharing the stage and a willingness to experiment without knowing what the end result will be...
Oz jams for DG and the Consort sometimes. The Consort doesn’t get it at first – until Oz re-tunes his guitar and takes "Purple Haze" out his back pocket.

Alt-grung rock doesn’t go far in the OZ. Starting a musical revolution is okay with Oz, but they have a scene he already likes.
The marching jazz bands here actually managed to keep their formation. Maybe because the Queen’s idea of ballroom music usually involved extended solos, drum brushes, and horns that can talk.
Oz suggested that DG bring back a Cab Calloway box set from the Other Side and now big band is the thing in the court of the Queen.

They decide to have a traditional jazz band for the wedding party. DG stands at the edge of the stage, still in her 1920s dress and Marcelle-waved hair, waving a lighter she got from someone from somewhere. No one gets it. But that’s okay.

Summary: The boys are really trying, but Buffy's not making it easy.
Buffy’s eyes went from the little figurine spinning in her palm to the redheaded wizard who had given it to her. "And this is?"
His eyes, in turn, went from Buffy to the picture of his twin. "What do you mean?" they said together.
"Okay, so obviously it’s a spinny little guy who... spins. Which is... great. I guess?" Buffy’s brows furrowed. "But I kinda don’t need one."
George Weasley shrugged while the picture of his twin chuffed in the background. "Actually true, but you keep talking about your Point Me..."
"Point me?"
"When you have a perfectly good wand," the picture of Fred continued.
"Point me?" Buffy repeated. "That’s, like, a first year spell, right?"
"Precisely," the brothers said in unison. "But seeing as how you’re new to the wizarding world," George said, "it seemed like a nice gesture."
"Uh, thanks. Except, I kinda mastered that the day your mom taught it to me. Soooooo, I don’t know what you guys are talking about. Like, at all."
"You are forever nattering on about this Mr. Point Me whenever some Dark Creature rears it’s ugly--"
"Oh! Mr. Pointy!" Buffy grinned. "My favorite stake. Not just for vampires any more."

Summary: What little Korean Dawn does understand is still going over her head.
Notes: This is total fanservice to my fellow k-drama addicts. It is also a companion to my 4 Girls Ha Min Jae... series. Translations at the end.
"Kamsahamnida." Dawn smiled and bowed to Min-jae’s mom, though Dawn’d only understood a quarter of what she’d said. It had seemed good, but Dawn wasn’t sure. Then she left the studio and Dawn could turn blank eyes on her friend. "What was that?"
Ducking his head, Min-jae smiled revealing those super-cute dimples. "Um..." His English wasn’t great, but Dawn’s Korean was worse, so it was worth it to let him get his words together. "You call me oppa."
"Um, yeah! You’ve been like my big brother since I got here." She bumped his arm with hers.
"Oppa is more than brother?" When he didn’t add anything she made a go on sign. "It also is... You know jagiya?"
"Sweetie?"
He nodded.
Her eyes widened. "Like boyfriend?"
Min-jae blushed.
"Is that why your fans give me dirty looks? But oppa means big brother!"
"Skinship."
"Skinship?"
Min-jae nodded. "Mmm." He took her hand, caressed her knuckles with his thumb, and looked deep into her eyes. "Skinship."
"Oh." She blinked hard. "And your mom... approves? Of us?"
"My jagiya? Omma disapproves. She was older."
"By a lot?"
He nodded. "Ten years."
Dawn rolled her eyes. "Please, my sister’s dated way older than that."

jagiya - sweetie, honey, baby, etc.
omma - mom
skinship - the amount of physical closeness, or lack thereof, between a couple. Explained better at dramabeans.

Date: 2012-03-05 06:40 pm (UTC)Remembering the marching snare drum, I can’t help but wish we’d performed “Purple Haze” under the searing lights, tripping over grass clods dug up by the football jocks in the first half. Instead we did “Birdland”, which is at least a jazzy piece. And always remember to be yourself; others may get it, some may not, but it’s all OK.
For the Buffy / Weasley fanfic, I can't help but think that the Weasley brothers had a bit more Muggle-awareness than most everybody in the wizarding world, and certainly within their family. Would they have played a prank on Buffy? Probably, but it would have been dangerous, given her reflexes and her proclivity to stake first and ask questions later.
For us Korean Drama fans that trickled over from the Dramabeans world, it took very little imagination to visualize the interaction between the two. Even if Min Jae didn’t get the chance to tuck a little hair behind Dawn’s ear, you could sense the connections being forged between them, with or without his mother’s approval. Way to go, my friend!

Date: 2012-03-07 02:05 am (UTC)As for the Weasleys...they're not trying to pull a prank on Buffy. They're trying to be helpful b/c she's been annoying them with her whining about Mr. Pointy if/when vampires appear. To go with this challenge's theme of "lost in translation" the issue is that they're mishearing Buffy -- partly through an American/English accent lense and partly through a Wizard/Muggle lense. They have no frame of reference for "Mr. Pointy" so they hear it as Mr. Point Me and create on for her so she'll stop whining. Which is why I need more than 200 words to make that clearer. Le sigh. I'll probably follow earcmacfithil's advice and post a longer version somewhere
