In her time on Riverworld, Buffy Summers had discovered these three things to be true.

First, if you died, you came back in most circumstances on a different part of the river. That had been the first, and most important, discovery of her time here. After dragging herself out of the river for the first time, she had stumbled upon a band of grail slavers preying upon the new arrivals. She had fought them as best she could without any weapons, but soon she had a sword sticking out of her chest.

The next thing she knew, she was swimming out of the river once again in a completely different and deserted stretch of riverbank. From the few that she had talked to, this wasn’t an isolated event. But your luck could run out at any time, and then you wouldn’t be coming back.

Second, there was a war being fought between the new Powers That Be. Only, she didn’t know which side she was on. She didn’t have a grail band, but she hadn’t been approached by the beings Burton had called “the caretakers”. She had been chosen, but for what, she didn’t know. All she knew was she was one of the few people standing in the way of Burton and his plans.

She was sure somebody was looking out for her. Her weapons and food caches remained undisturbed. Whenever she was brought back, it was within easy of walking distance of where she had stored them.

Third, and perhaps the hardest for her to accept, was that she was alone. No Scoobies, no family, no one from her old life. It didn’t mean she stopped looking, but not with the same urgency as before.

Everything was stripped away, and all that remained was Buffy.

Welcome to Riverworld.
