She’d never admit it, least of all to Lee, who had survived a frakking space battle drifting in his suit, but for one horribly long moment she was terrified.

I’m stepping through the door

Slayers were not meant to be in space. They were very much creatures of the earth- Earth, even, she suspected. Unlike all these Colonial types, in her world, spacewalking had been reserved for astronauts- something she’d had zero chance at becoming.

And I’m floating in a most peculiar way

But someone had to do this. Frakking Cylons had gotten Pegasus but good. Two jobs were absolutely critical. Garner had taken one himself. Then he’d asked for volunteers to cut away the debris and wires that would otherwise prevent them from retracting the flight pods. Buffy had never worked in zero-G before, but she’d do whatever it took to make sure the battlestar survived the day.

And the stars look very different today

She frowned at the instructions scribbled hastily on her glove, but got to work. The Cylons were still out there, and the sooner this was done, the better. Shame she had to hurry, though. Battle or not, it was one hell of a view.

The first time she’d seen a planet from orbit, Faith hadn’t been able to tear herself away from the viewscreen. Nero had laughed and asked the rest of her shift to let her be. She’d make up the work later- he’d known her long enough by then to know the human Ayel had rescued made sure she pulled her weight.

It hadn’t even been Romulus or Earth or any of the major planets. It was a dinky unpopulated world called Delta Vega, where they were hoping to find some ore that could solve the energy crisis on their homeworld.

She’d been fascinated by the view, to the point that Ayel had taken her ‘outside’. She’d been wary, seeing as her last time in space without a ship around her had involved nearly dying, but Ayel promised her that the EVA suit he was helping her into would prevent the intense cold, lack of oxygen, and total emptiness of vacuum that had been the problem the last time around. More to the point, he’d be going out with her.

As she hung in space, her feet thousands of miles above the planet , Faith decided she could get used to this.

Willow sighed softly.

Once, lifetimes ago, looking at the stars had been something special. City lights had blotted so many of them from sight that to see a sky full of them was unusual. Now she saw stars daily. Occupational hazard of space travel. Too bad that bright shiny future the people of Earth had dreamed of wasn’t all it was cracked up to be.

Seemed like the more things changed, the more they stayed the same. Human nature, especially. Fortunately, the Scoobies hadn’t changed much either.

When the Independents had refused Alliance control and war broke out, Buffy had realized the rim worlds were the safest place to hide Potentials. She had gone directly out there. Xander had followed a few weeks later.

It had been months since they’d heard from either of them, and that was cause for concern. Dawn was laying low at the Companion Training House on Sihnon, hopefully having a good time and not worrying too much. She and Spike were the last line of defense. Willow was the cavalry- although hopefully not literally. She wasn’t really fond of horses.

But Buffy and Xander were out here somewhere, and she was going to find them.

Spike looked at the pair blankly.

“Right. Let me see if I got it straight, then. You-“, he pointed one accusing finger at Tristran, “are in love with some silly bint who sent you off to find a falling star and bring it back to her. You’ve burnt your hand, gotten yourself well and truly lost, and have no idea how long this quest of yours is going to take, but you’re determined to see it through. I get that right?”

At Tristran’s somewhat cranky nod, he smiled.

“I think I like you.”

He turned to Yvaine.

“You, on the other hand, are the falling- no, make that fallen- star. You have no idea what idiot hit you, but you’re a bit hacked off about it and stuck with this one.”

She nodded politely.

“I’d say you should stick with him, luv.”

At the look on Yvaine’s face, he rolled his eyes.

“Kids these days. No idea what you’ve gotten yourselves into. You know he’s clueless, but you don’t seem to realize that you are too. Do you have any idea how many people would pounce on a fallen star out on her own? All he wants is a kiss!”

Nice collection of drabbles; good variation of characters, too, though I think I preferred the Faith one most. =)
