Alliance said weren’t no such thing as monsters. They were wrong.

She knew better; dark things lurked under the stars. Not just Reavers, the monsters the Alliance helped create, but creatures as old as the stars hunted in the black and the wild planets of the Rim.

Into every generation a Slayer is born, and this was hers; her duty to protect the black from the nightmares that had stolen away from Earth-that-Was, following food. She hunted and slay them and the ‘verse was safer, if only for a little while.

River had strength and nightmares before the blue-hand men.

I always cheer for Slayer!River fic; this is a very good expression of the concept in a very small space. =)
