Lee looked around and wrinkled his nose. Not that he had anything against pink and red, but the main foyer of Slayer Headquarters looked like it had been assaulted by someone overly fond of the colors. Whoever it was also had a penchant for cherubs, hearts, roses, and… frilliness.
“Dawn?” he called. “Is there an explanation for this?”
His girlfriend came running, evidently thinking he’d meant something more serious than bad taste.
“For what?” she demanded.
Lee gestured at their surroundings. Dawn looked puzzled for a split second before she understood what he meant.
“Oh, that. Someone decorated for Valentine’s Day.”
At Lee’s baffled look, she elaborated.
“Originally St. Valentine’s Day, the feast of an early Christian matyr. Over time, it became a day to celebrate romantic love. Then marketing people got hold of it and transformed it into a day of commercial excess, exploiting people’s feelings to force them to buy into it. Cause clearly if you don’t buy expensive things for your significant other and enjoy décor that looks like this, you don’t really love someone.”
Lee digested her explanation.
“So you’re saying this is like the Festival of Aphrodite?”
Dawn shuddered.
“Thankfully, Valentine’s is only one day.”

Faith scowled. She didn’t hate the holiday, but Valentine’s Day tended to annoy the crap out of her. It was all about lovey-dovey couples, and she’d never been one of those, even when she wasn’t single. She wasn’t sure why she’d been talked into going out tonight. She should have known better.
“I take it you’re not the flowers and candy type of girl,” purred a familiar voice.
Faith turned to glare at him.
“What would give you that idea?” she snapped.
“The expression, luv. The one that says you just might gut someone.”
“If that’s the case, why are you bothering me? You of all people should be staying well away. I still haven’t forgotten our last run-in, you know.”
Jack grinned.
“I never found flowers and candy very interesting either. Rum, on the other hand…”
He held up a bottle of Cruzan and a pair of empty glasses with a knowing expression. Faith only hesitated a split second. Drinking with Jack Sparrow could only improve the evening. And if she knew Jack, drinking wouldn’t be all he had in mind.
“Why the hell not? It’s not like B and D are going to notice.”
“That’s the spirit, luv.”
