"Do you know what today is?" Sam asked.

"The day I fail my sociology midterm because I've been up chasing monsters all night?" The sun was already rising, and Dawn's jeans were coated with mud and slime.

"Valentine's Day." She glanced up and caught the corner of his crooked smile, and felt her heart skip a beat.

"Saint Valentine is a baseless myth. Even the oldest texts--"

"Maybe. Maybe not."

Dawn peered up at him through narrowed eyes. "What are you talking about?"

"It's not just a greeting-card holiday, that's all I'm saying."

Dawn couldn't help herself: she smiled.
