March Amnesty, Part 1
Mar. 3rd, 2009 12:13 pmI'm trying to see how many of the previous challenges I can get through, but rather than save them up for one massive post, I'm going to put them up in batches. (If that's ok,
jedibuttercup?)
Title: Viva Las Vegas
Word Count: 200
Fandom: BtVS/CSI
Challenge: #000 - Starting Over
Disclaimer: Sadly, I don't own these characters.
Buffy looked around at the chaos. Unassembled furniture and boxes were everywhere. How the heck had they managed to acquire so much in less than a year? They hadn’t left Sunnydale with more than the clothes on their backs. But when they’d gone to pack up in LA, somehow there’d been a ton of stuff. Buffy had been horrified to think what packing up a whole house must be like if a few rooms in the Hyperion had held that much.
She really hoped they weren’t making a mistake moving to Las Vegas. But Sam, Catherine, and Lindsey had all in their own ways been so supportive that Buffy couldn’t say no to the one thing Dawn really, really wanted.
So Vegas it was. They had a chance at a fresh start. Dawn would be going to a nice, normal, non-Hellmouthy high school, and Buffy had been officially assigned as Sin City’s very own Slayer.
And speaking of starting…she’d better make some headway unpacking, or at least assembling furniture. It would be nice to have a bed to sleep on tonight- not that they couldn’t always crash at Cath’s or one of Sam’s hotels.
She reached for the nearest box.
Title: The Non-Relationship Drink of Choice
Word Count: 100
Fandom: BtVS/CSI
Challenge: #003-Cookies

Nick glanced from Buffy to Dawn to Catherine.
He was getting used to being confused whenever he was around both Catherine’s sisters at once. They spoke English, but between the in-jokes, strange idioms, and slang, it was practically a different language. But this time he was really lost.
He’d asked Buffy if she wanted to grab a coffee with him. That had set Dawn off on a riff starting with coffee and somehow ending with cookies that had a red-faced Buffy glaring at her. Catherine’s shrug said she couldn’t help him on this one.
Dawn grinned at him.
“Have fun!”
Title: Your Jedi Mind Tricks Won't Work On Me
Word Count: 200
Fandom: BtVS/ST:TNG
Challenge: #007 - Star Wars

“The Force is strong with this one,” Dawn murmured softly, suppressing a giggle. It wasn’t easy.
Watching Lwaxana Troi in action was a rare treat. She managed to discompose just about every member of the command crew, with the sole exception of Data. Deanna’s mother had already managed to aggravate the captain, embarrass the first officer, and irritate Worf. Geordi had simply fled for the sanctuary of Engineering. Dr. Crusher appeared to be hiding behind the buffet table watching the carnage.
She’d have to remember to thank Data later for inviting her to this reception. He was right, she was enjoying it.
At least, she was enjoying it until she found herself face to face with the object of her amusement.
“Why on Earth is your mind filled with… lightsabers?” Lwaxana enquired by way of a greeting.
“When did humans ever have such weapons?”
“Long ago, in a galaxy far away,” Dawn replied, making sure to keep both the truth well buried behind her mental shields. She hoped Lwaxana wouldn’t probe close enough to notice she wasn’t reading Dawn’s whole mind. She’d confess to Deanna later. After having her mother on board for several days, she’d probably need the laugh.
Title: Coping
Word Count: 200
Fandom: BtVS/Firefly
Challenge: #057 - Remembrance
Disclaimer: Sadly, I don't own these characters.
Xander wandered over to Zoë. This was the first time in a long while this crew had been more than just “getting by”. They were downright solvent. Thus the impromptu party in the cargo hold. But it was one short.
He seated himself on the crate next to her.
“I hear you used to be downright merry by times.”
“On occasion.”
He looked at her. Really looked- Zoë felt like that one-eyed gaze saw it all. Maybe it was because not having known this crew Before, he wasn’t as easily put off by her normal front. Or maybe it was because not having been There, he wasn’t coping with the same losses.
“Zoë- how are you really?” Xander asked softly. “I… I know I haven’t shared a lot about my life with the crew, but if it helps, I lost someone once too. Same sort of impossible odds battle. Afterward, I was left wondering why she died and I didn’t.”
“How’d you cope?”
Xander shrugged.
“Sometimes I don’t.”
“One day at a time, right?” Zoë said.
Xander nodded.
“All anyone can do.”
They watched River tease Jayne in companionable silence.
“Does it get easier?” Zoë whispered.
Xander shrugged.
“Not exactly.”
Title: Angels, Devils
Word Count: 200
Fandom: BtVS/CSI
Challenge: #070 - Double Trouble
Disclaimer: Sadly, I don't own these characters.
Catherine frowned as she scanned the club. She doubted Lindsey had been here on her own. Her sisters had definitely been a good influence when it came to making her daughter aware of personal safety, and not just on the supernatural front.
She knew Buffy had already lectured her only niece on the hazards of alcohol and men, whether taken separately or together. Unfortunately, both Summers sisters had a rather lax attitude toward underage girls dating older men. In comparison to Buffy and Angel, Dawn’s relationship with Greg looked downright reasonable- not that Catherine hadn’t made Greg sweat.
If she had to guess, she’d go with Dawn being the ‘responsible’ adult in this evening’s festivities. However, unlike Lindsey, Dawn was actually old enough to be in the place legally- and thus old enough that Catherine couldn’t have her sent home along with her partner in crime.
Sure enough, she caught a flash of brown tresses as someone hastily ducked behind taller clubgoers. Dawn probably thought she’d gotten away without being spotted, but between the hair and the costume, Catherine was positive it was her youngest sister. Who else in Las Vegas would have such realistic horns on their devil costume?

The CSI guys heard Catherine’s kid sister before they saw either of them.
“Spellbooks and corpses and crackheaded kittens, blood splatter experts and guys who wear mittens, vamp dust and CSIs wearing skull rings, these are a few of my…”
“Dawn!”
Catherine’s tone was long-suffering. She couldn’t wait for Buffy to get back.
Warrick and Nick both stifled snickers at the death glare Catherine leveled at them.
“Don’t encourage her.”
“Why not?” Warrick asked, grinning. “Best rendition of My Favorite Things I’ve heard in a while.”
“Yeah, Dawn, bonus points if you can work in Grissom’s fetal pig,” Nick added.

Date: 2009-03-03 07:25 pm (UTC)These were all great, but the CSI storyline caught my attention the most, and this particular line made me snort my coffee:
> "Spellbooks and corpses and crackheaded kittens, blood splatter experts and guys who wear mittens, vamp dust and CSIs wearing skull rings, these are a few of my..."
Love the creativity.

Date: 2009-03-03 07:37 pm (UTC)Dawn's version of My Favorite Things popped out of nowhere- I'm chalking it up to pure inspiration. I'm glad to see everyone else is enjoying it as much as I did!
