Warrick frowned. The look on Dawn’s face boded no good.
“Cath? Do you have a knife on you?” Dawn asked.
“Yeah, I always carry one,” Catherine replied drily. “What do you need a knife for? I get that you want to help us find Nick, but this is bizarre.”
“I’m doing a spell,” Dawn chirped. “Usually it’s used to locate people about to be sacrificed, but I figure that nutso clearly intends Nick to end up dead, so it should work.”
“The knife?” Catherine prodded.
“I need the blood of an innocent.”
“WHAT?”
“Willow adapted this from a spell that identifies an ideal sacrifice victim. It’s amazing how many dark rituals require that ingredient.”
“So you're going to stab someone?” Warrick asked.
“No! Intent is important in magic. We can’t take the blood by force, it has to be freely given. I’m usually around a bunch of underaged Slayers, so finding volunteers isn’t a problem. But Buffy’s the only Slayer here, so I’m stuck using mine.”
“Innocent?” Catherine snorted. “You?”
Dawn flushed slightly.
“Innocent in this case meaning…”
Warrick intervened, clapping a hand over Catherine’s kid sister’s mouth.
“If you stop talking right now, I will find you a knife.”
