Love The One You're With
Aug. 31st, 2008 11:59 pmChallenge: #078 - Six Degrees of Crossing Over
Disclaimer: I did not create nor do I own these characters.
Author's Note One more before the challenge closes! Not sure if the theme quite worked or not- Dawn wouldn't cooperate. At any rate, it was supposed to be six couples not looking for happily ever after.

He hadn’t been expecting to see her. Not that he wasn’t grateful, mind. Before her appearance, he had figured out a way to take out the massive nest, complete with master vampire. It had been a brilliant plan- although not one that included his own survival. He’d been resigned to it. For Queen and country...
The lithe blonde moving through the lesser vampires like a fury had changed his calculations. He’d jumped out into the fray and started in on the lesser minions so she could move her danse macabre to the bigger threats. Shame he hadn’t been able to watch most of it- she moved with a fluid grace he was unlikely to see in action again.
After the dust had settled, they had done what came naturally. He knew she would have to report to her superiors, as he would to his. He also knew without asking that what they were doing wasn’t about love. It was about the thrill and the need and the possibility that this could be your last night on earth. Words had been largely unnecessary. They had spoken only once, at dawn.
“Am I allowed to know your name?”
“Buffy Summers.”
“James Bond.”

Angelina knew James was trouble. For a start, he was a Muggle. By rights, she should have obliviated him the first night she’d brought him back to her flat, too drunk off her arse to twig that he wasn’t a wizard. He was older than she was- Alicia and Katie would go spare if they found out she was shagging a man nearly twenty years older than her. He also kept a gun. She wasn’t stupid. She knew guns were largely illegal for British Muggles. She was pretty sure he wasn’t a criminal, but she also knew he wasn’t a policeman. She wasn’t sure what he was, aside from really damn good in bed.
But she didn’t care. She didn’t need him to be there for her when she was old, assuming he lived that long. He made her forget, and right now, that was all she needed. Forget the Battle, forget the casualties, forget Fred. She suspected he was doing some forgetting of his own. There was a look in his eye now and again that told her he’d lost someone too. She didn’t ask who; he never mentioned her. It was enough that they were together right now.

Pansy Parkinson knew her own when she saw them. And Bruce Wayne was definitely her kind. Rich. Lonely. Messed up. Oh, yes, she wasn’t too proud to admit to being a mess. Losing one’s parents to the Dark Lord did that. And an outcast, too. She had committed the cardinal sin for a Slytherin-she'd showed her hand too soon. Been too public about being ready to sacrifice the Boy Who Lived to save herself and the people she cared about. She wondered why Wayne was such a wreck.
“Bruce…you poor thing. Fending off supermodels all evening must get so tiresome.”
The sarcasm hooked him quicker than nice would have. She had expected that. What she hadn’t expected was the look in his eye. Wary. Tired. Like it was all an act and it was wearing on him.
“I don’t think I’ve had the pleasure, Miss…?”
“Parkinson.”
“The industrial heiress whose parents had that unfortunate boating accident off the coast of Scotland.”
“That’s the polite version,” Pansy told him.
Pansy knew better than to think she could have Bruce for more than a night, but she’d take what she could get. And she was pretty sure she could get him naked.

Bruce glanced over at his guest. Alexis Murphy wasn’t like most of the girls he occasionally dated. For one thing, she wasn’t under any illusion that he was in love with her. They were friends with benefits, emphasis usually on the friends and only occasionally on the benefits. They’d met as freshmen at Princeton. He had known her for years before she’d even mentioned Isla Nublar.
But when she had finally told him, she’d been totally honest. Which was why, with Rachel no longer there to confide in, he’d told her about Batman. He needed someone other than Alfred and Lucius to know. Someone he could turn to if everything went wrong and he needed help figuring out what was him and what was this monster he’d created. He knew now it had to be someone he wasn’t asking to put their life on hold and wait for him. And now that he had told her everything, he was terrified she’d tell him he was crazy.
Lex just rolled her eyes at him.
“So, shorter version, you’re a vigilante who beats up criminals dressed as a giant bat. And you think this is weirder than man-eating dinosaurs how exactly? ”

Beverly Crusher should have known better. The man had appeared on the bridge stark naked, after all. It had taken all of thirteen minutes before the entire female half of the current Enterprise crew had heard about him. He had flirted with Troi, but everyone did that. He had flirted with the female security guard escorting him to sickbay. Worf had looked even crankier than normal by the time the trio had walked through the door. He had flirted with every nurse in sickbay. And, of course, he had flirted with Beverly herself.
So how the hell had she let Ian Malcolm talk her into going for a drink? She couldn’t even tell herself it was just hormones. She was old enough that she should be able to control herself. She was a Starfleet officer, the chief medical officer on the fleet flagship, dammit! There were a million reasons why she shouldn’t get involved with him. And… oh, who was she kidding?
She was horny as all hell and the look in Malcolm’s eyes promised he’d make it worth her while. And unlike every other male on the ship, she could be sure he really would be no strings attached.

She’d had many names over the years, and many lovers. They’d come and gone, some by choice, others who had stayed with her until death did them part. But as the decades wore on and she grew resigned to immortality and all that went with it, she’d found it harder to open her heart. It hurt to let people in when she knew they’d be gone so soon. She’d been alone for over thirty years. She’d been Aurora Aestiva for twenty-seven.
It was ironic that on the Enterprise, she found herself drawn to Data of all people. An android. Somewhere, she was sure, the Powers were laughing at the girl who wasn’t really human loving the machine who wanted to be. She didn’t even know if he could love. She wasn’t sure if it mattered, anyway, after this evening. She was going to tell him something no one else on this ship had heard from her: the truth. Her real name. Her real birthdate. All of it. And if he felt betrayed, if they were no longer friends when she finished… she’d have to live with that. But it would be so good to hear someone call her Dawn again.
Mods, there doesn't seem to be a Batman tag...I didn't know if it was ok to make one or not.
