Unsanitary Species

 

Pro bono, Barry B. Benson was doing pro bono publico work and in Los Angeles of all places. His wings picked up speed as he hovered a moment, straightening his tie before darting into the small office. A young woman—young by human standards that is—with hair the color of fresh honey sat with her shoulders hunched, but her head lifted with his entrance and he darted around her straightening form.

 

He smiled, swooping down, towards the opposite side of the desk as she leaned forward and picked up a pushpin. Barry settled himself, wings calming and opened his briefcase. He flipped through several police reports before removing a yellow and blue legal pad. Pushing off with his legs, he took flight once more and his antenna rose in astonishment as the woman put the tack in her mouth—yuck—and spit it out with her next breath.

 

The pain was instant as the metal rod pierced his thorax and he impacted the far wall. He reached forward, narrow black fingers pushing at the edge of the plastic cap as his vision tunneled and Barry B. Benson’s last thought was that humans truly were the most unsanitary of species.
