Dante watched the cute blonde cadet enter his store. He already knew what she was here for: enough power bars and other snacks to completely fill that smack bag. He wondered why she still carried it. He'd worked on base awhile, and he knew the cadet traditions. She was in jogging clothes, so she must be an upperclassman.
They had it down to a routine. She moved the whole display bin right up to the counter, and transferred bars into her bag, while he counted them.
As she handed him money, he tried to open a conversation. “So, another munchie run for your squadron? Why do they always stick you with it?”
She regarded him carefully. “I like to run.”
It was lame, but he tried anyway. “Really? I do too!”
He saw she wasn't buying it. “I don't have a chance, do I.”
She smiled sympathetically. “Sorry, I'm not allowed to date.”
He put it together. “Wait, you mean...”
She was already leaving with her plunder. She called back, “Don't tell anybody!”
Randal approached from where he'd been watching. “Shot you down, didn't she.”
“And I'm not even supposed to be here today!”
“Apparently, neither was she,” observed Randal.
