Truth in Fire

 

In the center of my palm laid a hefty pinch of a dried and crumbling plant. Death can always be found in the coiling smoke of burning tobacco and as I watched the flames eat up the brown leaves, I’d tossed, a shadow formed.

 

It took a moment for my eyes to see the person through the fire and smoke but once I had my shoulders sagged and I felt the tears burn greater than the flames as I looked into the blank face of Mollie Prater.

 

There was no stronger truth to tell me that she had passed on.
