Dawn grinned. She was in a much better mood now that she’d had a bath. These people did nothing by halves. The bath had been a perfectly decadent affair, scented, bubbly water, lovely soaps for her skin and her hair. And the towels were the fluffiest ones she’d ever touched. She really wanted to ask them how they got their towels so soft without the benefit of dryers. As far as she could tell, they weren’t into technology. No electricity in Lothlorien. But they did well enough without it. And the weapons…Buffy would have kittens if she could see them.

Dawn stared out at the stars. She’d been doing nothing but watching them for six days. That wasn’t normal, but then, not much about her was. Being ageless and immortal tended to separate one from the rest of humanity. She still helped the Council occasionally, but they hadn’t called on her in several years.

She’d been terribly lonely since the loss of Spike twelve years back. Her faithful lover was dust on the winds of Ariel, thanks to that stupid, stupid Alliance bitch who’d somehow known about vampires. The Key might have been tempted to try out her power, leave this dimension, were it not for the fact that it was nearly time…

She remembered the day her family had disappeared like it was yesterday, for all that it had four hundred ninety-nine years, three hundred fifty days. And Whistler’s cryptic statement: If you wait long enough, you’ll see them again. It had taken a lot of time with books of prophecy, but she knew when they’d be, and had a decent idea where too. She just had to tough it out a few more days. She could do that. After all, persistence- some would say stubbornness- was a Summers family value.

Willow blinked. This wasn’t right...

“Was that it, Wills?” Buffy asked, surprised. It had been years since Willow had flubbed a spell. This one was supposed to send the Slayer to wherever she was needed most. Yet here she was, still in Giles’ library at Slayer Central, with her best friends and Watcher.

Willow frowned. “I don’t understand. It should have worked. And something happened, I felt the power.”

“Perhaps this is where Buffy is needed most,” said Giles thoughtfully. “Although I can’t think why, Council headquarters is hardly short on Slayers.” He stepped over to the window, as if to reassure himself that there wasn’t an attack imminent.

“Oh dear lord.”

“Giles, you can’t just ‘Oh dear lord’ us like that!” Xander yelped.

“I fear the spell has worked. It sent Buffy-and us with her, apparently- to where she is needed most. The question is where exactly that is-I don’t think we’re in Britain, and despite the signs, I doubt this is China.”

There was a minor crush at the window as the other three joined him.

“Is that a space ship?” Xander asked, pointing.

“Oh dear Goddess…” Willow murmered. “Maybe the question is less where than when.”

Because I could not stop for Death

Buffy frowned at the black. No one had warned her that a life spanning centuries could get boring. Then again, who could have? Angel and Spike hadn’t actually been that old. A few centuries seemed a venerable age to a girl who didn’t expect to see twenty-five.

He kindly stopped for me

Five hundred years had altered that perspective. Several centuries of saving the world, and eventually, worlds. When mankind reached for the stars, she’d seen to it that Slayers followed. She herself had been on the last ship to leave Earth (That Was). To protect mankind been her sacred responsibility too long for her to leave it to anyone else to see that all humans got safely away.

The carriage held but just ourselves

She sometimes wondered if there was any way to undo what had been done. How was she-or Willow- to know that her gift could be given only once? Watching all your friends die was a heavy price to pay. Well…nearly all. She’d gotten a wave from Wills. Dawn finally had a lead on that “Academy” all the young Slayers seemed to be disappearing to lately.

And Immortality.

The first one was cute; the other three, a little melancholy and a lot interesting. I'd love to know what happened next in the world where Dawn was waiting for the rest of her family to reappear, and I'm always a sucker for Immortal!Buffy stories.

These make 10/6!
