I stared in disbelief at the tiny slip of a woman sitting on the other side of my desk. “Let me get this straight,” I said, careful not to meet her eyes, “you want to pay me a thousand dollars to introduce you to Michael Carpenter?”

“Yes.”

“Why can’t you just walk up to him and introduce yourself?” I asked, still confused by the whole situation.

She sighed, a soft sound that was nearly swallowed by my office. “It’s complicated, Mr. Dresden.”

“Uncomplicate it then. Michael is a friend and I’m not going to just to introduce a stranger to him because she pays me.”

“It’s a matter of life or death, but there’s this protocol I have to go through first. I don’t like it, but it’s the way things have to be done,” she said irritably. Apparently she was just as unhappy about this as I was.

She sounded honest and she played the damsel in dsitress card, which tugged at my chivalrous side, but something about it felt false. I also needed the money she offered. I’d have to talk to Michael first before giving her a definite answer. “I’ll see what I can do, Miss Summers.”

Interesting. I'd really like to know why Buffy needs to meet Michael, of course, but it works. =)
