Kansas was too frickin’ hot in the summertime even at night, Willow thought with frustration. At least there was a breeze outside, though the Kents would die to know she was wandering the empty streets alone on her first night in town.
Headlights caught her eyes and she winced, moving even further off the road.
“Do you need a ride?”
She leaned down to look in the window of the shiny silver car, a smile teasing her lips. It was Clark’s friend. “No thanks, Lex. Just trying to cool off.”
“By walking alone – at night?”
“I’m a big girl – I can take care of myself.”
“I don’t doubt that,” he chuckled softly. “My car is air conditioned, though.”
She raised her eyebrows and adopted a playful tone. “My mommy told me not to accept rides from strangers.”
“Are you saying I’m strange?”
She laughed. “Aren’t we all?”
He leaned over, opening the door for her. “I promise not to go too fast.”
Feeling daring, Willow threw the handsome man a wink. “What if I like to go fast?”
He smirked, eyes sparkling with a heat incomparable to the summer night’s own warmth.
“Then I think we’ll get along just fine.”
