Moonlight Ride
Dawn sat very still in the passenger seat of Anita’s Jeep. She had decided to walk to the café for dinner, when Anita had pulled up beside her and told her to get in. That had been twenty minutes ago, and they didn’t seem to have a destination. Dawn knew she wasn’t one of Anita’s favorite people, and the silence was starting to make her a bit nervous. She had to break it.
“So, is this the kind of ride I go home after? Or is it the kind where I pissed of the executioner and have to disappear?”
Anita answered Dawn’s matter-of-fact tone with a strange look before taking a deep breath.
“Actually, this is the kind of ride where I do something I never, ever do.”
“And that would be…?”
“Apologize. I know I’ve been an ass about you and Richard. I act kind of stupid about him sometimes. Truth is, as much as I hate to admit it, you’re good for him. Since you’ve been around it’s like he’s finally made peace with himself.”
They shared a friendly smile before Anita added,
“Of course, if you hurt him, I will have to make you disappear.”
