title: A Chance at a New Unlife
word count: 100
fandom: Anita Blake
challenge: #000: Starting over
notes: Dawn tries to start fresh, but that means a new job...
Dawn stared at the nameplate on the desk.
Calm down. It's okay. Just a job interview.
For the best-paying job ever, she scolded herself. Working nights, leaving days open for research and stuff.
She knew it all. Rituals, trade secrets, rumours, scandals.
And she could do it. After Sunnydale, she'd tried again. God, could she do it. All she needed was a chance.
The man she had been waiting for sat down and smiled an empty smile at her, his grey eyes flashing greedily.
"So, Ms. Summers," he said, "What interested you in working as an animator at Animators Inc.?"

fandom: Smallville
challenge: #000: Starting over
notes: Poor Xander, can't catch a break.
Here we go, Xander thought. Nice normal small-town USA. No demons, vampires, vengeance demons, praying mantis ladies.
This town had cornfields and one coffee shop; some farmers still rode horses to the feed store. It was hours from civilization, but he had a modem, to keep in touch with his buddies. His girls.
All he had to do for his vacation year from saving the world and finding Slayers and dealing with YAA (yet another apocalypse, as Willow dubbed it), was teach shop to a bunch of high-school kids. Dawn laughed when he told them, but it sounded right. Something new. Something his.
He surveyed the room. It was his first day, and he was gleeful that things were going so well. Nothing could go wrong--
*SNAP*
Xander watched as the tall dark-haired boy, Clark, stood holding a solid four-by-four beam. Or, rather, two parts of the beam.
No one human could have broken that beam, a solid chunk of tree Xander moved earlier that day. Even some Slayers would have had trouble. And the kid just stood there, unsurprised.
Clark gave Xander a sheepish look. "It just sort of fell apart?" he tried weakly.
Xander sighed.
It just figured.
