“I hope you don’t mind my asking what is you’re doing in Harlan County, Miss Lehane,” the Marshal asks her leaning against the hood of her truck.

“I don’t mind at all, Marshal?” she asks, lifting a brow.

“Givens, Raylan Givens,” he says, tilting his hat at her, all smiles.

“Marshal Givens,” she adds, moving the corner of her shirt aside a moment so that the gold of her own badge flashes in the sunlight.

“So?” he asks again with a half shrug.

“Just passing through, checking on things,” she tells him, walking on by and into the Bennett store.

“All right boys; go play with the federal,” the woman behind the counters nods her head at the three men, ignoring their whines as they leave.

“Apple Pie?” Mags asks, picking up a jar from the counter.

“Sure,” she answers, putting her own jar on the counter to be filled.

“Always said you were a clever one,” Mags grins and pours them both a shot.

“What can you tell me about the girl?”

“Loretta?” Mags takes a sip, “she’s a crafty one, when the spell hits her she’ll be better ‘en you.”

“Any chance you could tell me what it is you’re looking into the Bennett’s for?” he asks.

“Who said I was looking into the Bennett’s?” she says, climbing into the cab of her truck.

She grins as he turns her words over in his mind. He’s nowhere near any sort of truth she would give him.

“Not even as a small favour, one federal to another?” he drawls.

She wishes she was who she had been for moment, so she could take up the offer in his eyes.
